Engaged Mindfulness: Building Capacity for Antiracist Advocacy and Action
Course Description
In this introductory-level course, participants explore ways to utilize mindfulness to build capacity for antiracist advocacy and action based on the seminal work, The Inner Work of Racial Justice by Rhonda Magee. This course includes four 90-minute sessions. In session one, participants explore ways to connect antiracism to the practice of mindfulness as a counselor or counselor educator. In addition, participants identify and utilize organizational tools to create the group structure and process for their antiracist mindful practice as a group, including intentionally creating the group culture, community agreements, strategies for managing conflict, and self-care. They also engage in mindfulness practice during the session as hands-on practice of the concept being studied.
In sessions 2 through 4, participants utilize Magee’s text, alongside other mindfulness approaches, to elucidate ways to further understand and engage in mindfulness as a skill for antiracist counseling education and practice. Participants engage in self-of-the-counselor activities to deepen their understanding of their social and cultural positions in relation to this practice, alongside experiential group activities. Embracing the uncomfortable learning that is inherent in this work, mindfulness tools will be utilized throughout the course and required in between sessions to help build capacity and confidence for participants. This workshop is facilitated and cosponsored by Culture Ally and the International Network for Antiracist Teaching in Counseling (NARTIC).
